Retainer FAQ
I deliver a wide range of consultative services in my Technical Leadership, Solution Architecture, and Product Design practice areas, including:

There are three options for working together:
Vanilla Hourly
Work with me on an ad hoc/hourly basis. Standard rates apply.
Block Retainer
Buy a block of hours at a 10 – 30% discount off my standard rate. As I deliver services, time is deducted from your retainer balance. Blocks are available for purchase in 5-hour increments and are valid for one (1) calendar year from invoice date.
Monthly Subscription
A flat monthly fee guarantees my availability up to a certain number of hours at a 20 – 40% discount. Unused hours do not roll over from month-to-month.

I don’t currently have the bandwidth to personally deliver complete website, application development, or data visualization projects. With these types of projects, I typically “rough in” the deliverables (e.g., prototypes, proof of concepts, etc.) and take on a technical leadership role to deliver via other developers — my team, your team, or a team we identify together.
Once our Vanilla Hourly, Block Retainer, or Monthly Subscription relationship is in place, working with me is simple. The process depends on the type of support needed:
Advisory Services
Once we’re up and running, you will have self-service access to my calendar and can schedule online meetings to establish a cadence of collaboration that works for you.
Project Assets or Other Deliverables
You will be provided a dedicated email address to use for any non-calendar request, including any request pertaining to the creation of project assets or other deliverables.
The amount of time needed to fulfill your request for a project asset or other deliverable will be determined on a case-by-case basis — the request scope and complexity evaluated against my current workload.
I will do my very best to accommodate your urgent or short-fuse request. If moving your request to the top of the queue will adversely affect the delivery of another customer’s request, necessitate a meeting cancellation, etc. I will always obtain the approval of the impacted customer(s) before engaging on your request. If the customer consents to the change, I will proceed with your request at my emergency rate.
You can expect complete transparency and a detailed accounting of all hours logged in my online billing system. As I work, I track my time at a task-level and annotate each entry. You can login at anytime and view time and activity.
I maintain strict confidentiality by default and do not disclose any details of our relationship without your explicit consent. If your project necessitates more formal legal protection due to intellectual property concerns, I am happy to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Every potential client relationship kicks off with a Discovery Call. It’s an opportunity to meet, discuss your needs, and ensure that I’m a great fit.
- I am unable to work with any healthcare organizations due to the terms of my current employment.
- I deliver consulting services outside normal business hours (Eastern Time) and on weekends.
- I take on a limited number of clients and projects to ensure I exceed expectations on every engagement.
- I won’t work with anyone doing illegal, sketchy, slimy, or otherwise questionable gray-area sorts of things.
- I reserve the right to determine what is sketchy, slimy, questionable, or gray and refuse service accordingly.
